The job market in the UK is a meandering, ever-changing scene. For decades there have been conversations over which is ‘better’ – contracting or permanent.

The quick answer is that one isn’t objectively better than the other. Each has its benefits, and it’s imperative that people understand the differences between the two.

Key differences to consider:

  • Pay - Salaries offer regular pay security but don’t keep up with seasonal changes in market rates which tend to increase throughout the year.
  • Notice periods - They protect you from same-day notice but require planning and contractual agreements.
  • Application process = Interviews or office visits can be time-consuming but allow you to get an understanding of a business and the team you will be working with.
  • Bonuses - When contracting, pension, sick, and holiday cover as well as expenses for fuel, travel, accommodation etc. often must be covered from your pay or sacrificed entirely which requires consideration.
  • Training - Permanent hires often receive ongoing training and can use company equipment to upskill and progress within their role and company.

These are only some points to consider. If you are thinking of moving from one to the other but aren’t sure exactly how that impacts your pay, career progression, earning potential, or job stability, then please get in touch with one of our team and we’d be happy to discuss as you begin navigating the job market.
